Great Kings' War was first published in paperback in 1985 by Ace Books. This 2nd Edition is a revised and expanded version of the long awaited sequel to H. Beam Piper's Lord Kalvan of Otherwhen, chronicling the further adventures of Calvin Morrison, Pennsylvania State Policeman--forcibly retired.

This new edition is revised and expanded (over 60,000 words) by the authors with new maps, including Hostigos Town, Hostigos and the Five Kingdoms, and a new dramatis personae.

Calvin Morrison was a pretty good cop in Pennsylvania-until he was scooped up by the cross-time flying saucer and transported to Styphon's House Subsector, a 16th Century equivalent parallel time-line. Here the Indo-Aryan invasions went east across Asia and down the Aleutian Islands into North America, where they have stagnated for thousands of years. Dropped off into the middle of a local dispute, Corporal Calvin Morrison comes face to face with warriors armed with pikes and broadswords, not petty criminals. Lord Kalvan, as the locals call him, transforms the petty Princedom of Hostigos into a fearsome warrior Kingdom by inspired leadership and advanced military knowledge.

Now, after having created and saved his new nation of Hos-Hostigos from destruction by Styphon's House, a tyrannical theocracy that holds sacred the secret formula for gunpowder, Kalvan, now Great King of Hos-Hostigos, faces his greatest challenge-keeping what he has won.

The Holy Host of Styphon and the Royal Army of Hos-Harphax, two of the greatest armies in the history of the Five Kingdoms, are on the move and Kalvan will once again have to call upon his knowledge of military history to save his family and friends. This time it's personal!

Great Kings' War Lord Kalvan Book 2 eBook John F Carr Roland Green

I enjoyed this book very much, especially since the original author of "Lord Kalvan of Otherwhen" was no longer alive to continue this plot. Others have stated it gave too much background and etc. of the Paratime Police and University, but my opinion is ( I have an A--hole to go with it also.) this only expands the story so that the following volumes can flesh out the tale. Unfortunately I probably won't get to read them since I am on a fixed income and refuse to pay $8.99 for a digital copy. I don't know why the publisher thinks that these books are worth so much when their cost is so little compared to print copies. I have several authors that I no longer follow in Kindle form for the same reason. There are so many indy authors I can read for $0.00 to $4.99. My 2 cents. Dan

P.S. I go through 3-4 books a week so I look for deals or visit used book stores, LOL.

Great Kings' War Lord Kalvan Book 2 eBook John F Carr Roland Green Reviews

The continuing adventures of Lord Kalvan, formerly of the Pennsylvania State Police. The battles are well done, but I was unable to read the maps. You just have to draw a picture of the whole Eastern seaboard in your own mind. I plan to read the rest of the books, in due course.
A fantastic sequel to H. Beam Piper's Lord Kalven of Otherwhen. I normally am not a fan of alternative history but this book rocks. I recommend it highly.
I purchased the books in this series because I adore "Lord Kalvan of Otherwhen". Unfortunately this series written in a different darker time in America and lacks the optomism thing that made Lord Kalvan a story I read at least once a year. Lord Kalvan of Otherwhen embodied the American dream that if you work hard you can be a success and have a better life. It was one man succeeding and changing history. But in this book the seeds are set for Kalvan being overwhelmed by the forces arrayed against him. And indeed in the following books the story gets darker as that is exactly what happens. Further the characters who I loved because their virtues were too perfect now also become darker and their flaws are not the result of their virtues. I don't care if it is more realistic, if I want less perfect heros I'll read something else, when I read the Kalvan stories I want a virtuous hero whose intelligence and goodness results in him succeeding against all odds. If that is what you want too, I suggest you avoid these books. If you want a realistic alternate history military campaign then these are probably to your taste
you'll also like the series' continuation by John Carr and Roland Green. These books are much longer than the original novel, and as books they only seem to be available in hardcover, so try to get the version if possible - it takes up much less space. If you've never heard of Lord Kalvan of Otherwhen, note that the author of that book is H. Beam Piper.
This is a book that I read in paperback when it first came out, and have now added to my to reread at my leisure.
In my opinion, the best of the series.
Great Kings' War (Lord Kalvan Book 2)
A good follow-up to Lord Kalvan of Otherwhen, albeit a bit repetitive of the original tale—but perhaps that couldn't be helped. H Beam Piper, author of the original tale, was quite a fine writer, and knew both his history of warfare and antique firearms. A fine premise and plenty of excitement is available in the series. To those interested in this sort of writing, I recommend both the first book and this sequel. (Can't say as much for the gaudy and inartistic cover, though.)
Hugh Beam Piper was the originator of the Paratime Police wa-a-ay back when. King Kalvan is in fact a Pennsylvania State Trooper who gets transposed into this alternate world where he meets and conquers the local militias and in this Book really establishes himself as a Great King. The one thing I always enjoy is the technical life of the sixties and what the inventions are going to be. What no one thought of pipe smoking as injurious to their health and every minute of the story has everyone reaching for a smoke; in the middle of a battle yet! True to Piper, but beware you may get lost in all the characters. But force yourself! Its worth it.
